When Tommy Lawton - the current England centre-forward - moved from Division 1 Chelsea to Notts (then in the bottom tier of the Football League), it created a media frenzy.

Notts were - despite their lowly status - serial headline makers in both the local and national press. Lawton followed playing legends Hughie Gallacher and 'Dixie' Dean and top manager of the era, Major Frank Buckley to Meadow Lane over a period of less than a decade. Crowds of 30,000+ became commonplace at Meadow Lane.

The club regularly created extraordinary news but over the next 20 years, those headlines began to reflect increasingly troubled times, culminating in spells at the very bottom of the Football League during three consecutive seasons in the late 1960's and endless battles simply to stay in existence, all in front of crowds which had declined to just 3,000 hardy souls. 

How did that happen?

This is the painful story behind that all too rapid decline during a largely forgotten era.
